Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati
Soekarnoputri says the party’s declining popularity is caused by a lack
of solidity within it.
“We face a lot of problems in terms of regeneration and career mechanisms that have not been properly institutionalized,” she said during her opening speech at the party’s third congress at Inna Grand Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur, Bali.
“The PDI-P is also facing the declining militancy of its members. Volunteerism and activism are fading away and are being replaced with “benefit and loss” considerations,” she added.
Megawati said the PDI-P had been facing external challenges as well as internal ones.
“The PDI-P must work amid a society that has been growing in a pragmatic, transactional and instant manner, all for short-term individual interest,” she said.
“Therefore, this third congress must be able to provide answers to all those problems,” she added.
The PDI-P’s third congress is scheduled to take place until April 9. The congress’ main agenda is to officially appoint a new leadership structure for the party for the 2010-2015 term. (JP/IP)
